Westende Junior School in Berkshire Services Directory

Westende is just a short walk from the town centre and quite close to the exit for the A329M leading to Junction 10 of the M4, and Reading. The area served by the school is mixed and covers a large area with a range of housing types. The school is built around a central courtyard and has changed significantly in recent years following an internal rationalisation programme which has seen the original openplan teaching areas replaced by individual classrooms. There is a wellequipped hall, a large library with a network of 16 computers with highspeed Internet access, and other areas suitable for a range of group activities. Outside there are extensive hard and grassed playing areas, a wildlife garden, an adventure playground, a sensory garden and an openair heated swimming pool. The central courtyard is used as an outdoor classroom in fine weather and as a place for eating packed lunches. Currently there are 8 classes, two in each year group, each with between 25 and 30 pupils. There is an additional parttime teacher who provides noncontact cover, and a substantial team of Learning Support Assistants. Teachers plan and work cooperatively, following a cycle of topics covering the National Curriculum, many with crosscurricular potential. There is setting in year groups and by ability for English and Mathematics, and all subjects are fully implemented and well resourced. We set and expect high standards from our pupils in both work and behaviour and they rarely disappoint. The curriculum is enriched by a wide range of visits and visitors, and a variety of afterschool activities. In September 1995 the school opened ‘The Acorns’, the first junior school resource in the country for pupils with a diagnosis of Special Educational Need for autistic spectrum disorders. The pupils have their own base within the school but are integrated with support into mainstream classes for up to 90 of the week. The Resource currently provides for its maximum of 12 pupils, with two full time teachers and four support staff. We offer an ‘outreach’ service on the management of ASD pupils in mainstream schools across Berkshire. The school has an active and supportive parent body. Parents are welcomed into school and provide additional help in many areas. The Governors are interested and involved in the progress and life of Westende and join pupils and staff for training and on visits. Westende is recognised as an ‘Investor in People’ and particularly commended for our staff development. We achieved the new National Healthy School Standard in July 2006, and were awarded the coveted De Bono Thinking Schoolkitemark for our use of the Six Thinking Hats November 2006 Further information about the school, including recent news, can be found elsewhere on this website.
